Moving Tips

There are many costs associated with moving. Here are some tips to lessen the overall cost of your move.

🔷 Clear communication with your movers prior to move day is important

  • Touch base with the moving company at least one week in advance if; your plans have changed or you have more (or less) than what initially thought would be moved.

  • Time is money therefore, keeping your moving company updated is helpful for your movers to remain prepared for an efficient move.

🔷 Declutter prior to moving

  • Sell or donate items you will not need or want in your new home.

  • If you have items you have not been able to sell or donate ask neighbors, family or friends if they have use for them.

🔷 Packing tips for moving

  • Begin saving packing supplies from any shipments you may get several months in advance of your move

  • Look for free moving boxes (friends, family, retail stores).

  • Banana boxes from the supermarket are sturdy, have handles & a top. A thick cardboard lining covers the hole in the bottom of the box. A towel or other cardboard can be used to cover the opening on the top.

  • Use blankets and towels for wrapping and cushion in boxes & totes.

🔷 In place of pricey wardrobe boxes use the bag & hanger method of packing your closet

  • While clothes are hanging rubber band 15-20 hangers together

  • Make a small hole in the bottom of the bag

  • Bring the hangers through the hole

  • Make sure all the clothes are inside the bag & tie the drawstrings

  • Label the bag so your movers know which bedroom closet to hang your clothes your new home

🔷 Be prepared on move day

  • Label your boxes & color code. At your new home use color sticky notes and label the rooms. This saves your movers time when unloading at your new home.

  • Have your boxes packed, taped & ready for your movers to load onto the moving truck.

🔷 Additional tips: Extra ways to save on the time it takes your movers to complete your move.

  • Remove televisions from wall mounts. Box televisions in television boxes.

  • Remove photos and art from walls. Pack for safe transport.

  • Roll up rugs, shrink wrap or tape.

  • Disassemble & assemble beds (secure the screws & bolts in a small zip lock bag then tape or use shrink wrap to adhere the bag to the item it was removed from).

  • Remove shelves from cabinets, bookcases, tv stands, etc. (secure the pegs, clips & brackets in a zip lock bag then tape or use shrink wrap to adhere the bag to the item it was removed from).

🔷 If appliances are being moved have them ready to go

  • Remove food from the refrigerator and freezer. Disconnect & defrost if necessary. Have it ready to be moved onto the moving truck.

  • Disconnect washer & dryer. Have it ready to be moved onto the moving truck.
